I am treading into new territory. I am buying a late 70's Freightliner FLC from my brother in law. I have posted about it a little bit already but I have a price now and have agreed to buy it and also it appears I may have an engine for it too.
Aluminum hood truck, air ride, sat in that spot for over 20 years so far as we know. Engine is a dead 8v92t. Transmission is TBD - my wild guess is a 13 speed. Last owner is getting elderly and has dimensia. My brother in law bought his property and they thought I was perfect to get that truck. For what it is I am getting a pretty reasonable price. It is located in Southern Oregon out east of the Cascades so it is pretty dry there which may have helped preserve it. On the negative side it has had a known rodent problem so cleanup of that mess will be an early issue.
So the installed engine has been apart and open like that for a couple decades. Justin M. located a more recent 8v92 that is a DDEC engine on some sort of run stand. Rebuilt with no running time but someone hooked up the batteries wrong so the story goes and fried the ECU. More research needed. I don't know which DDEC it is or what sort of added wiring to put it in this truck. Alternately can it be converted back to mechanical injection? If it can be a good fresh DDEC engine I imagine that isn't all that bad.
My brother in law promises more truck pictures and a search for the VIN/data plate is on along with more detailed photos. If anyone can ID the engine based on the photo or provide any details for me to research further.

So Dan I need you to educate me on these Deetroits. Tell me what you can identify on the motor on the stand in terms of electronics and how hard will it be to adapt this non electronic truck? Most older EFI systems were fairly self contained and just had a few things that talked to the truck itself.

Kevin-----The aluminum colored box under the turbo and ahead of the blower replaces the mechanical governor. The black rectangular box at left side of the control panel is the ECU , to the right could be a rheostat for throttle control, or because the bottom of the picture is cropped off, could have the foot pedal which would also have a rheostat built in . I should have an overview of the electronic components and sensors involved that I can direct to your regular email . It appears it has the complete harness to run the engine as could be used in a training class.
Nice classic, by the way ! Rick Knox may have started a following in another cult !

I almost bought a FLC the last time after I sold the 81 A model. The wide hood KW was too unique and cool of an old truck. I really wanted a small cab KW. It is close enough to done I just need to keep making little improvements with it. The FLC is something I am hoping is cleaned up and operable in time for Reno and maybe it rides the trailer there. I sent money for that DDEC II 8V92. So I have a motor for it. Next will be paying for the FLC and getting it moved home. I think having it running and driving in 2018 is a reasonable goal giving the backlog of projects and house remodel projects I have stacked up.

Have some more pictures up on my smugmug page for the FLC. I bought that DDEC 8V92TA for pretty cheap so between the 2 I should be able to come up with 1 runner. Probably going to see if we can get that DDEC engine running on the stand. Goal is to have it home in the next year and hopefully at Brooks by 2018, who knows maybe it will ride there on a trailer this year.
So truck is between a 77-79 near as I can tell (would love for someone to narrow it further) 8V92T currently, 13 speed, air ride, steel frame, aluminum hood, factory Freightliner sleeper.
All the pictures here:

Looks like fun Kevin! Rodents in the sleeper can be fun....especially on a slick road...

I am not sure. I haven't seen the truck in person.

Tony------They used to supercharge the compressor by getting the feed air off the airbox...............In this scenario, you're turbocharging the compressor ! And that Deeeeeeeeeeeeeetroit gets the compressor backfeeding the geartrain so you can back off on the throttle. How 'bout it ? Say wha' ?
