John Frances saves the day, again. This is a Dain, or "Great" Dain as it says on the front. A Great Dane also appears on the data plate on the seat, so it must have been the company mascot. Joseph Dain built 1, 2, & 3 ton trucks in Ottumwa, Iowa from 1912 to 1917. A 4 cylinder engine was used through a friction transmission. The rear drive was by an internal tooth bull gear. Thanks to Don MacKenzie for these rare photos.

Dain Manufacturing was bought by John Deere in 1911 and they've been in Ottumwa ever since. I guess the trucks were a separate company.
