Try EBAY or some local Detroit shops, no telling what might sit on a dusty shelf in a dark corner. Scanner with DDEC 1 software from EBAY would help too the one Glen mentioned can be had from EBAY cheap

I don't know anything about this stuff but if the EPROM or PROM looks anything like these they can be plugged in either way and only way is correct. If you don't identify its register mark location before you take it out you'll never know  how to put it back in. If somebody has it in backwards and smoked it you'll have to figure a a way to start over.

You need a reader like prolink or the DD software on a laptop to read and program. There is no replaceable prom there as for as we can change. The ecm may have a prom but its not field serviceable.

I haven't found much reference material for the DDEC stuff online but from reading the bus groups this might have a prom that will work at least for testing. Hopefully someone will be along shortly who knows more about the DDEC stuff.

Wonder how hard it is to get a prom?

So after reading the PDF file on the code setting for the DDEC and the code you are getting 1st thing I would do is check to see if there is a PROM
installed in the Box. and if there is?  get the #s from it and see if you can get a replacement. If someone installed the PROM incorrectly its enough to make it fail.
The diagnostic procedures are typical GM procedures for automotive gasoline systems of that time. and I can tell you from experience that I code 51
is a prom frailer/missing prom code. The ALDL is the same connecter that GM used on all their vehicles up until they started using The OBD 2 connector in the mid 90's. Codes are pulled the same way. Hardware is very similar. PROM is probably the same uvprom GM installed in the ecms they used in all of the vehicles they built at that time, Only the bin file is different. The Bin. file is what the ECM is looking at and has to be able to read to make the engine run.

This is from a while back.  I have replaced the broken fuse holders with some blade types.  Seems like the test box works.  Turn the power on, get a green light.  Turn on diagnostics and get a check engine and it blinks 1 5 or 5 1.  The red stop light is off.  Green power light comes on and the yellow check engine light is steady until you switch on diagnostics.  Have good batteries and a new starter.  I have primed via a boat primer attachment on the fuel filter housing.  Fuel comes out of the return line.  I don't get any smoke or indication it is attempting to fire.
This is a DDEC 2 and its got to the right side what we call a truck in the box. This is for running a engine out of the truck. It has all of wiring a truck has in a box.

Talk to Detroit Wayne and give him the info from the valve covers on both engines, he should be able to tell you what is compatible with what.

DDEC1 should have an ECU and an EDU, DDEC 2 just has a ECU/ ECM here's a link to diagnostic info for DDEC1 since it flashes codes and the check engine light works, the EVU is most likely ok

http://www.wanderlodgeownersgroup.com/downloads/DDEC%20I%20TroubleShooting%20Guide.pdf

Following the codes in the above manual the calibration prom in the ECM is faulty, Which would be why it does not want to run find a prom for the power rating of the engine you want and you should be golden of follow the trouble shooting steps for code 51

I just went and turned it on.  I get 5 pause 1, then 5 pause 7 so 51 and 57.  Pretty sure this is early DDEC so DDEC 1.

If the computer is bad.  It is probably more cost effective to go back to mechanical injection for which I believe I have all or most all the parts.  I have the racks and injectors for sure and a lot of smaller stuff that is probably the rest.  I haven't inventoried it yet but if there is anything missing it is probably not something hard to replace or very costly.  Injectors I have are 9A90's which are stock 435 horse injectors.  Turbo on the good engine part number goes to a 500hp engine.  Now it would be cool to have a well mannered DDEC 3 or 4 8V92 but I just don't know that I can afford that anytime soon.  If I get this one running and it is healthy enough maybe someday I can switch it back to electronic.  If I had another ECU setup to try maybe it would work.  Probably easier to pull the blower on the bad engine, pull the governor off and do likewise to the good one and put the governor on and then put all the injectors and hardware on.
