This truck, known as Brutus was built up from an ex-military Sterling DDS235 in 1963 by Ross Todd Motors for logging contractors T. Doidge Ltd. It was fitted with a 6.71 GM and Comfo Vision cab. Going by pictures of the Sterling it was built from, I think it was a DDS235 model-obviously the driven front axle was replaced. Pictures show a similar Sterling and Brutus with Doidges and later owners.

post-17290-0-51587900-1455425867_thumb.jthis was built  mid 60.s by jack erhet
NR MACK rollin chassis   335 cummins   4x4 spicer   cab was repaired from a wrecked k100
no cab jack just 2 boat winches mounted to  frame that held the muffler n intake and it lifted about 1/3 of a normal kw
I hated workin on it and  was nervous every time       a 352 pete back the cost   the same as 3 average Sydney houses or about 1.8 million bucks today so
if you were a battler like jack you built ya own!!!!

Ron and Hamish,
We are greatfully learning!! Thanks to this website and all the pictures / stories that you gentlemen are posting for our education. Keep up the good work!!
The mechanics of that era must have been fantastic inventors / artists to be able to put together some of these trucks.

My Dart looks like the 1st picture with the louvered hood with the stacks thru the hood. Was also Spec'd similar with the "General Motors Diesel" as they were known then. It has the Fuller but was missing the Aux and rears when I got it. Best guess is around 1954, I think it was '58 that KW bought them.

The dump truck in the photo is a slighter bigger model-model 275 with Hercules DFXH diesel with twin stacks, I think.

Yes, Ron. It was built up from a late 1940s-early 1950s ex-State Mines Department Dart model 250/462 dump truck originally with 6.71 GM power-model 6094-200 h.p.-Fuller 5A-1120 gearbox and Timken SD462-W double reduction rear end. Southland Excavating at Invercargill repowered it with a Cummins NT335 and converted it into a road going heavy haulage tractor unit. The cab and guards came from an IH Loadstar F1800-incidentally the first F1800 sold in N.Z.-to Stewart's Carrying Company of Wyndham, Southland. Pictures show a similar State Coal Dart, the rebuilt truck with Southland Excavating, with next owner J.R. Bishop, and a later picture. It looks pretty professional considering it was built up in a Kiwi workshop. I'm not sure where the KW-Dart badges came from-when this truck was converted in the mid-1960s Darts were KW-Darts-whether the badges came from the States or were made locally, I don't know.
