I cleared a hyd lock on an L10 when the turbo shaft snapped and dumped engine oil into the engine, Just held the exh valves open in turn while another turned the crank.  It went on to live for quite some time after a new turbo on it.

Good Point! You can tell I'm a Big Cam owner, cause I didn't think of that!

geoff ive cleared hyd locks on bigcams with jakes by  screwing  jake adj screw in   2 turns   1 turn closes lash 2nd opens valve about 15 thou
most were caused by leaking aftercooler element

Thank you all for the input. It definitely has a compression release so a good place to start might be giving that a pull to see if it moves - I could also pull the valve covers to watch for proper operation there. Later this week I will get out there and drain a bit of oil out of it to check for contamination.

Does the compression release open the exhaust and intake vales or only one of the two?

intake     it takes a fair bit to force water out of the cyl so as i said hold pressure on the turning tool 3-4 ft leverage an d it should slowly move
and loosen manifolds or water will just get sucked back in , draining the pan and finding water will only confirm it is hyd lock

Like Pop said crank the plug and make sure water didn't go to the bottom of the pan, pull the compression release and hit the switch, as long as the compression release is pulling all the valves open you won't have a problem, and it should, none will stick to hold it open as long as it is in adjustment.  Most likely it came up on compression on one cylinder when you turned it by hand and stopped you.

hmm i would still get it to turn by hand first    if a few push rods have been replaced with later 'non hat' types which is common and that cyl is full of coolant
damage can occur but please yourself
