This is a cool demonstrator truck for Bendix-Westinghouse. Emblem removed.

I'll say Federal.  The equipment is interesting if you magnify it some.  In front of the tank is the brake valve and its foot pedal above it.  The big diaphragm above the tank looks like air over hydraulic master cylinder.  It the thing with the tubes pointing down an air separator?  I looks like there might be some de-icing alcohol injector equipment on that display also.

Bendix-Westinghouse picked a smart looking Autocar to be their demonstrator truck. This 1939 truck appears to be an RL or RM model which were introduced in 1936. B-W had Schnabel of Pittsburgh build the custom body. Brocky had this first. Our photo is from the Historical Pittsburgh Digital Collection. The ad is from 1937.

I have been watching these WAI posts for a while now.  I don't get very many of them right!  But, it's fun to try to figure them out.

What amazes me is how similar multiple brands looked in the early days.

It's kind of interesting how early vehicles (both cars and trucks) shared so many design characteristics.  Lots of similarity.  Probably due to them trying to solve the same design problems, and using the most practical solutions.

Then, for many years, it seemed like all the manufacturers tried to differentiate themselves from their competition by having there own style.  This was very noticeable in the designs of the late '40s and '50s.

Now, all these years later, it seems like most things are, once again, more similar.  I think this became most pronounced in the late '80s and '90s.  I guess aerodynamics and such have helped to shape lots of newer vehicles.  So, they are bound to become similar in shape.

A friend of mine once commented about a really nicely restored '50s or '60s Cadillac we were looking at, "That's what cars looked like before wind tunnels blew all the style off of them".  I thought that was a pretty profound observation!
