Not at all. The charge voltage has been raised over the years as battery formulation have changed, with the low water use/ sealed batteries the charge voltage needs to be about 14.2 to fully charge them. They make adjustable regulators for that, but you have to use resistor to set the voltage. The std setting is good for most automotive use. I had to use an adjustable when I was making a charging system for my deep cycle multi stage charge, but for normal automotive service, the std reg set point will be fine. You can use it as self exciting or add the lamp/resistor for quicker turn on.

This alt is like Jim brought up its self exciting but you need to rev it up to start charging. Geoff you don't think that 14 volts will cook the batt

14.2 is normal charge voltage. Some go as high as 14.6 on a fixed setting. My multi stage charge regulator was 14.9 on bulk before dropping to finish the charge.

Geoff Weeks (10/28/2022) One of those that end in 7 anyway, LOL What is the one that used the square "voltage selection" plug? I thought that was the 27? Not that it really matters, I know which regulator he is using. I guess I'll have to study my Delco book. I reduced my inventory to 25 and 26 SI's made my life simple! You're right! I didn't know it but there are two types of the 27-SI, 100 and 200. The 200 has the square plug. The 100 uses the idiot light.  |
