Jack Amaral got us on the right track, this is indeed a big 1932 Stewart 8 with a Utility trailer. This beautiful unit was owned by Brid Tank Lines of Southern California. The Stewart 8 was introduced in 1931 and used a 420 ci Lycoming straight eight developing 130 hp. The 5th wheel pin location on the trailer is set back pretty far, and it seems like it would put more weight than neccessary on the drives and tag axle. Does anyone know why this was done ? Thanks to John Frances for these photos from the Dick Whittington Collection at USC. The ad is from the May 1932 issue of CCJ.

A rough guess would be either maneuverability, or, if the truck ever ran in slick conditions, better traction (although, traction with a live/ dead tandem could be bad to begin with).
