Massachusetts DPW Snow Removal Photos Here are the latest additions to the MassDPW collection. Great stuff!
Serious looking plow truck!
Hard at work! Nice plow train shot! Looks like a Walter, maybe an FWD and a clean up truck A couple of Oshkosh doing road work. I've seen serrated grader blades to cut hardpack off of roads but never a disc harrow. Looks like an early 30's Walter (flat single piece windshield). Here they are pushing a full blade of snow somewhere in the great state of Massachusetts. Another early 30's truck. Note the railroad style lanterns used for lights. Of course a Walter with 100% traction can push this blade of snow without any apparent ballast. It looks like they had to add to the top of the plow in order to take full advantage of the truck. This is a shot of loading up the hard way- shoveling onto a conveyor and then spreading it out in the bed. Member reckirb13 sent the following pictures in to share. They are of snow plowing by the Massachusetts DPW on an unknown state highway. Thanks for the contribution and enjoy! Different views of early 1960's Mass. D.P.W. Walter ( State # S984 ) plowing on unknown ( to me ) state highway. The following are some additional snow fighter photos, and some of my favorites. Different views of 1960 Mass. D.P.W. Walter "U" model (State # S876), being loaded with sand/ salt mixture in Concord. These were some B-I-G trucks!! I wish they were still around. New late 1940's Mass. D.P.W. Walter at the D. St. Garage in South Boston ( Southie ) 1938 Mass. D.P.W. Walter ( #S696 ) plowing on Rte. 1 South, in Westwood. Late 1940's Mass. D.P.W. Walter being serviced at the Wellesley garage. Here are some Ford truck pictures from Mass DPW-Thanks Bob Hi Bill, This time up, we have one of an order of 1979 Ford F-7000 diesel dump trucks with GarWood 5-7 yd. dump/sander bodies. The body could also tilt forward sanding. Not sure of the plow equipment, but looks like Frink. Shown in front of the former Gibbs Ford, in Saugus, Mass., which, at the time, was one of the only Ford heavy duty truck dealerships in the Boston area. The state plates and door decals had not yet been put on. Bob

Mid 1950's Town of Hull, Mass. Highway Dept. Walter, one of two delivered at the time. Great trucks! They pushed a lot of snow off the main roads and hills in town during the winter, as well as hauled tons of seaweed and debris off Nantasket Beach during the summer. They were also fitted with Flink tailgate sanders for ice control during the winters. Delivery photo taken at C.N.Wood Equipment Co., Watertown, Mass. More Mass DPW truck photos New 1954 Mass. D.P.W. FWD, with Frink plow equipment and Torwel sander. State door seals and license plates have not been put on yet. Thanks Bob- Keep the photos coming! Excellent photos! I'd love to see more Mass DPW stuff, especially their FWD's and Oshkosh's. Do you have any photos of vintage Mass Pike equipment? Bob just sent a couple more pics. They are from January 14, 1964. Enjoy! 1950's Mass. D.P.W. Walter being loaded with sand/salt mixture
