We may as well have a page for snow rollers. We have about everything else snow related.
Snow rollers were used to compact the snow on roads very early on. They were horse drawn and made the streets around a city or town into a hard packed surface that people and horses could walk on. It worked out well for sleighs and they were used even after automobiles started using the roads. One advantage to a snow roller over a plow is they did not make a snow bank that blowing snow could create a massive drift blocking the road.
They should not be confused with the smaller agricultural type of roller used by farmers in the fields. Snow rollers were at least 6' in diameter and I have seen pictures of them that look to be 10' in diameter. PLOWMAN
