I should know this one but some ID characteristics are a bit odd.
I will go with a pre-war Biederman, model as yet unknown.

I'm a little surprised no one said Marmon-Herrington; this is an early Army M1 wrecker and M-H had a contract to built the first ones. But Brian Kelly is right, this is a Corbitt 54SD6 6x6 from about 1938-40. Prior to the war Corbitt built their 54SD6 in several different variations for the military including refuelers, C2 Air Force wreckers, and F1 tanker tractors. During this same time Corbitt was developing the 50SD6 6 ton 6x6 which would soon become the Army's standard 6 tonner. When the contract was awarded Corbitt's entire production went to producing the 50SD6, and the contracts for the M1 wreckers went to Ward LaFrance and Kenworth. Hamish suggested this photo from Mike Lusher, who posted the 1st 2 images below on Facebook. The small article is from Fred Crismon's U.S. Military Wheeled Vehicles.
