It was also the Engine that helped win the War.  Introduced in 1938, it was well established by WWII time.  They put them in just about everything.  Including large Ships.

Regardless of the name. the engine proved to be more popular then GM badged heavy trucks that used them. If you had a product or component that could stand on its own and make a profit, there is good reason to give it its own name and product line.
Even so, the automotive market was only a small sliver of the Detroit sales, and  removing the name tie to automotive only was good marketing . Afterall, the other big diesel in the market weren't tied to a vehicle makers name.

Aaron: I don't recall  it was mandatory, however, "Detroit" markets better than
"General Motors" Diesel as they opened up sale of engines to other truck manufactures.

Wasn't there something about General Motors and the diesel motor and it had to branch off to a different division and became Detroit Diesel.

This is how the logo changed on some of the industrial power units.
Instead of a bolt on plate I think the next was GM Diesel stamped into the shroud.

Then Detroit Diesel stamped in above the radiator.
