I RECENTLY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY STARTER ON MY 48 FORD F2 PICKUP. DRAGGING AND SOMETIMES CONTINUES TO SPIN AFTER STARTING OR AFTER SHUTTING IT OFF SO I GOT A REBUILT COMMING . IN THE MEAN TIME IVE ATTACHED A COUPLE OF PICS OF THE OLD ONE AND HAVE TWO QUESTIONS. FIRST THE COMMUTATOR BAR TO ME LOOKS PRETTY SHINNY AND SLICK (WORN) THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO RIDGE(SEGMENT) DEPTH LEFT ALTHOUGH YOU CAN SEE THE LINES. SECOND QUESTION IS DOES THE GEAR TEETH GO UP TOWARDS THE SPRING WHEN REINSTALLING OR BACK DOWN THE SHAFT TOWRDS THE ARNMATURE? I ALSO DOWNLOADED TWO PICS OF THE DIFFERENT POSITIONS IM ASKING ABOUT. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP.

Your armature needs to be turned and undercut. Easy job at a motor repair house.

Towards the spring. The gear pulls in from the back as the starter spins. When it starts the flywheel spins the gear to the back on the starter "screw".
