Yea Tony he was for 41 years, I helped him for over 20 of that. He was a tough old yankee, had to be to do that. When he gave it up they tried to get me but I moved on to bigger and more profitable things. When I was helping him I couldn't go to the store without someone jumping on me about something so I decided it wasn't for me!!!

Geoff, You can do no greater service to your children than teaching them to love a good dog. I believe a dog is God's gift to man and we have 2 German Shepherds that my wife has completely spoiled. Dan Cornett, All I can say to repeat what Maude used to say "god will get you for that". lol Needlenose and Toy, I just took a cooling water pump to Colstrip Montana last week and those pics are all too familiar but I am sure global warming will take care of it. HA-HA Wayne

Amen! I'll take just about any of the K-9 family over humans. Some execption, but as a general rule. If I could find a way to make a liveing helping animals, my trucking days would be over.

Where in Colstrip? Sarpy Creek mine? thats my stompping ground. Haven't been doing too much stomping lately, been fixing the Marmon since the ring and pinion let go in the International, and fighting with the state over transfering regiatation.

What crop is planted in your pictures? Strawberries?

It sure has been beautiful weather here in CA. 73 today. But boy are we hurting for some rain.

Your water truck is going to be in demand this year!

If that broccoli had already gone to seed when the deer ate it, they could gather up the deer s**t left behind and gleen the seeds out of it. They should pass right on through. Then they would be certified organic !

I'm sure the guy who planted the broccoli is not amused.

The pic of Class of 77 looks to be in familiar surroundings, just like outside here except for the absence of 3-4 ft drifts.

Well we got snow - sort of. I'm not complaining, I have no love for the stuff and last year we had 0°f often enough, so I'm hoping winter will be short this year.

No trucks this time, but some ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) sets at the Westbahnhof yard facing the station. Those are suburban and regional trains, single and double deckers.
http://i.imgur.com/hh6ZnwS.jpg

Nice Railjet sets - this is the ÖBB's flagship passenger train which runs between all the major cities in Austria but also into Switzerland and Hungary (see more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railjet).

slim im not sure about arrons pile but mine is hardwood mostly aussie iron bark
and the iron bit does not stop at the bark !!!
to cut a ton which because its so dense is a very small pile
you would need to sharpen the chain at least 3 times
a log 12-14 inches long x 8-9 inch diameter will burn on full choke in the slow combustion fire for a good 10 hrs
but even though the coldest it gets here at night is about minus 3 celcius or 22 degrees F

Been a long time since we had a good old fashioned winter, so most of those V plows are ornaments on the highway department lawn, or sold off as surplus, and scrapped.

Reason the roads had to be kept open back then was the milk. New York was the leading milk producing state, and it had to get to market.

Yours truly left WNY just in time, and enjoying Southern Arizona sunshine.

Just before Christmas at my house.

Got this in an email this morning.

Sums it up pretty good.

Dear Diary...

August 15 - Moved to our new home in New York. It's so beautiful here. The lake to the north looks so majestic. I can hardly wait to see it snowcovered. I'm going to love it here!

October 14 -New York is definitely the most beautiful place on earth. Theleaves have turned all the colors and shades of red and orange. Went fora ride through the park and saw some deer. They are so graceful.Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise,I LOVE IT HERE!!

November 10 - Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting tokill such a gorgeous animal. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here. Those red and orange leaves have covered my yard. Looks like a magnificentmulti-colored carpet. HOW BEAUTIFUL. Raking and cleaning up the yard willbe an opportunity for invigorating exercise in the cool crisp air.

November 15 - Ah, more leaves and more exercise.

November 18 - Jesus, still more leaves. Guess it's best to wait until they'veall fallen before I rake again.

November 25 - Finally, all of the trees lost their leaves and with today'sfinal raking it's over for this season.
Chiropractor suggested I use a lawn maintenance service next year. Only fourblisters became infected. Should probably remember to use gloves.

November 30 - What the hell? Where did all of those leaves come from? Hada little wind last night and the lawn is covered again. Oh well, they'll justhave to wait until spring.

December 12 - It snowed last night, FINALLY. Woke up to find everythingblanketed in white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleanedthe snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. Had a snowball fight (I won)and when the snowplow came by and we had to shovel the end of the drivewayagain.
What a beautiful place. I Love New York!

December 14 - More snow last night, I love it. The snow plow did his trick tothe driveway again. I Love it here.

December 19 - More snow again last night. Can't get out of the driveway. Can't to get to work. I'm exhausted from shoveling. Damn snowplow.

December 22 - More of that white shit fell again last night. As if dealing withthe leaves weren't bad enough, now I've got blisters all over my hands fromshoveling, must remember to wear gloves. I think the snowplow hides around thecorner and waits until I'm finished shoveling the driveway. The asshole.

December 25 - Merry Christmas. More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands onthat son-of-a-bitch who drives the snowplow, I swear I'll kill the bastard.Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the damn ice.

December 27 - More white shit last night. Have been inside for three daysexcept for shoveling out the driveway after that plow goes through every time.Damn gloves got wet and then froze on my hands.
Doctor said it was just a mild case of frost bite, disfiguration is probablyonly temporary. Can't go anywhere, car is stuck in a mountain of white shit. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the shit tonight. Do youknow how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?

December 28 - The damn weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of that whiteshit. At this rate it won't melt 'till summer.
The plow got stuck up the road and the bastard came to the door and asked toborrow a shovel. After I told him I'd already broken six of them shoveling allthe shit he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one on his head.

January 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get foodand on the way back I hit a damned deer that ran in front of my car. Didabout $3000 damage. Damn beasts should be killed. Wish the huntershad killed them all last November.

May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. The thing is rusting out from allthe damn salt they put all over the roads.

May 10 - Moved to Naples Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their rightmind would ever live in that God forsaken state of New York!

At home I try to work on projects in the shop during the cold months, but once in a while a guy has to go play in the show.

Fortunately the snow usually only lasts a few days around here, just have to put up with the cold.

Eddy, We have them at the fence regularly and if we did not have the dogs they would be at the door. It all varies with the weather, how hungry they are and what time of year. Sorta like married women. I have found the white tail to be extremely curious and will come to a steady sound. I have seen them mesmerized by the motor on our aereator as it runs continuosly. Wayne

Bob, I had the same deal. I had an lod chevy with a plow and took care of all my neighbors and never asked anything. When it was gone I have one with a kubota that comes by. Otherwise nobody else says anything and like you they will drive by on their tractor with loader and blade and just go on. Learned me a lesson it did. Wayne

I didn't post back in Dec when we had our ICE storm. Today we had a very slight dusting of snow. We woke up this morning to see flakes the size of a nickle.

the weather was cold enough for long enough that the road went white even with the couple hundred vehicles that travel on it of a morning hasn't done much to clear it yet

I'm going to have to erect a temporary tent over this thing if I am to get it painted and back together before the end of the month. I hate having it right outside the door of the bus but hardly anywhere else to work on it since I can't get it through the shop door

Terry,

Wish you were over my way. I took my backhoe to the other house 25 miles away last winter so I have no way to push snow this year since my mower tossed a rod and the blade wont push its self. I have lived here 13 years and cleaned out the drives around me just to have something to do and never asked for anything. Now I have snow left over from the first big storm covered by layers 3 foot deep and I can't lift a shovel. Do you think anyone will clean out some of it for me? I see tractors and trucks with plows go by but not one has stopped and asked if I need help. We park by the road now.

By the looks of the woodpile. you must have bought Shirley a new saw and axe.
The picture of the pile of wood brings to mind a time, when I was a drinking man, when I stopped by my friend's house to get him as we were going on a toot. As I was backing out of his driveway, his wife yelled, Don there is no wood split. He looked at me and said, "she must think I have the axe with me".

grenfell34 (5/1/2014)
jim that's very true but   I allways wonder were they decide to 'hole up ' for winter???
they like somewhere warm and dry
wood piles seem to be a favourite for browns!!!
but don't tell shirly lol

Bob,

Some people just don't get it. I do 2 of my neighbors drives not for cash but I get payment in other ways. We all just help each other out. We often gather and one of our houses and have drinks & dinner or a bonfire and sometime we all meet up at a mailbox on our lawn tractors! Now that get's looks from passers-by...

Middle of December at our local Christmas parade. Temps were in the 40's. Earlier this week our temps got down to 16 deg F.

It was about 70 deg here yesterday. Time to get the trucks out for a mid-winter wash and drive. Supposed to be around 19 deg Friday morning.

Sunday looking east from Whidbey Island, WA (Jan 14') About 48' North Latitude. We had several nice sunny days - balmy by comparison to what others were experiencing. Today it was 46 and very rainy - not the typical continual drizzle we often have. Probably about 42 in these pictures.. exceptionally nice day.

I am at work in Howell, MI the next day or 2 and it is below 0 right now with a high of 10 or so tomorrow with new snow coming.
By kblackav8or - 6 Years Ago
This was this afternoon in MI. Under 10, wind blowing snow about about 20 mph. Piled up that all that snow in front of the truck in a couple hours from somewhere else. About 6" deep. The Michiganites are all complaining the salt isn't working because it is too cold and about other stuff so I must be experiencing the real thing. Want to get my work done and get back home where it has been in the 40's all month.

I made it up to -10 today, nice and sunny though. Yesterday was -18 for the high and quite windy. I'm getting soft, the 200 feet to the mailbox and back was enough to pretty near freeze me to death. LOL I haven't had any snow for almost 2 weeks so the snow is getting dirty and mangy looking.

Got up to about 10 degrees here today. I went out and bought a pair of snowshoes Saturday, tried them out today in the 2 feet of powder we have on the ground. I made a 100 yard loop out into the woods, and now can hardly walk from tired sore muscles. Gee, winter is fun!

Slim a pair of them have burned every evening on our table for 52 years as we discuss the days happenings and concerns before dinner. We use very clean burning, low order, mineral spirits paint thinner for fuel instead of the low grade kerosene you get today. The old stuff used to be as clear as water. That's the stuff that made Rockefeller rich.

Steve it's not in the budget this year. This new  generation tried to vote in a tennis court at the school instead. Of course that upset the old timers so they left their wallet at home on town meeting day.
This small town has 71.69 miles of road not including 14.3 which are called class 4 unimproved. 10.4 miles of paved state highway. 4.49 paved town road and 56.8 miles of  "mud" road.

Years ago I took a shot at town politics and was voted in as Selectman, My shop office soon became selectman's office because everyone knew I was here all day. I'd be getting visits and calls about "when you gonna get some gravel down and grade my road?".  Even the $500 a year salary wasn't enough to make me except a second term. I still do a lot in the background but not everybody knows about it.

Roger, you must have had a shot at selectman. Wasn't you dad road commissioner of Corinth for many years?

When we were first married my wife was thinking of a clothes dryer. I bought her a couple of big screw hooks, a pair of 6" rope pulleys and 100 feet of line. That got me off the hook for quite a few years.

Newfie same here. Been watching everyone get dumped on. We have a green but frozen yard. Not even worth a picture.

The birds are still hungry but our commando squirrels disappeared. I'm still scratching my head on that one. We don't have any mean dogs in the neighborhood. The neighbors would die before they'd eat a squirrel. There hasn't been any squished squirrels in the street.

Wayne,

The deer hunters have been chasing a big buck I've never seen but the trucks up to my bird feeder are huge.

Aaron, I solved that problem when I was still trucking. I'd stop by the house on the weekend and cut a pickup load of wood and get back to trucking. If she wanted to stay warm she had to figure out how to unload the truck, split it and haul it inside and feed the stove. It always got done! The truck was always empty when I got home and she was glad to see me, and I'd throw my worthless brother inlaw out of the house, again.

LOL For the rest of you, it's been in the 40s & 50s with lows above freezing here. I had to wait days to get a heavy frost and then scrape a big driveway clean to come up with that photo. I probably could have done better defrosting the fridge. But the temps have dropped into the single digits and below. Yesterday and last night it snowed and snowed. They'll need to be resized. You'll have several options to resize them. You might want to think about lowering the settings in your camera so you won't have to do this in the future. The options you have depend on what you have installed on your computer I use a program installed with Microsoft Office called Microsoft Office Picture Manager, it's in the Microsoft Office Tools folder. There are several photo editing web sites you can use. Any search engine will bring them up by the dozens. This one is at the top of the search engine list today, http://www.picmonkey.com/
